54. FoolishPeople, TERRA: EXTREMITAS – THE END OF THE EARTH, Aug 6-10 2008, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
In association with the PickUpClub, NDSM-werf, Amsterdam
'Terra:Extremitas' is an immersive and interactive Meta Event, which re-interprets the year 2012 from the perspective of an Art Apocalyse. Spectators will arrive on the Last Day of Humanity at the BulkHead (the NDSM-werf) which is the only safe place remaining uninfected by The Fiction. During the evening, reality will unravel and the narrative will repeat allowing spectators to follow different characters, threads of narrative and discover different art installations and intimate performances in disjointed time. The event itself will feature Sequential Art, a live performance transmission from the Philippines, Nightmare Toys and intertwined installations, which each hold a significant part and understanding of the world of Terra:Extremitas.
Talented artists, musicians and visionaries are collaborating with FoolishPeople from the UK, USA, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, Greece and the Philippines. They will use the Open Source Myth, initially imagined by John Harrigan of FoolishPeople, and their own unique methods to enliven an aspect of the landscape of Terra: Extremitas. Imagining hidden art and installations which recreate whole swathes of reality, multi-sensorary experiences, and which will fuse to communicate one story on multiple dimensions and levels.
FoolishPeople will weave all the myth shards from each artist together and create a narrative of Theatre of Manifestation, working with performers to create real experiences in an immense ritual space that offers a transformative experience for the audience. Throughout the evening, we will challenge the artists's and audience's core perceptions and experiences of how they view and interact with art and reality. We ultimately want to engineer an environment to raise a numinous experience within both the witness and participant, in order to provoke positive change.
Over coming weeks there will be a Google Map of the NDSM-terrain, (http://tinyurl.com/6724zn) which will communicate and enable direct experience with aspects of the narrative prior to the audience's arrival. You can explore the digital world of Terra: Extremitas even if you are unable to witness the event, learn its language and watch The Fiction unfold.
'TERRA:EXTREMITAS- The End of the Earth'
Hidden within a former shipyard, near the ruins that were once Amsterdam is the BULKHEAD. The most important location on planet Earth; the last place that remains uninfected with The FICTION...
The final remaining survivors flow into the BulkHead’s safety.
This is the place where humanity must learn to deal with the fact that its species is TERMINAL.
Two hours ago, UFOs thought to be manifested by The Fiction began appearing above the Bulkhead, beaming the following message:
THE END OF THE EARTH, THE END OF THE EARTH, THE END OF THE EARTH...
Reality is being devoured by a surreal nightmare. The Fiction has arrived
Twenty minutes ago The Fiction, a phenomenon thought to be insentient, requested an audience with Captain L Taylor, commanding officer of PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATIONS BATTALION 800 and the BulkHead. Something calling itself ‘Queen of Fiction’ has an offer for Homo-Sapien....
Immerse yourself in the immense, interconnected story manifested by FoolishPeople and over 30 visionaries and artists working together from across the world within the unique landscape of Amsterdam’s NDSM-werf.
Follow living characters, absorb live transmissions from the other side of the planet, and discover all the hidden secrets and art, which each hold a fragment of the Terra: Extremitas myth.
The surreal and beautiful experience of exploring humanity’s last day on earth.
Notes to editors:
FoolishPeople create Weaponised Art, Ritual Theatre and Film, to raise a numinous experience within the witness by unifying Hermetica, Gnosticism and the Esoteric. We engineer immersive experiences, which become a catalyst for positive change in rapidly declining societies.
John Harrigan founded FoolishPeople in 1991, taking its name from The Fool major arcana of the tarot, as the name under which he would create his art, performance and writing. Since then, FP has evolved to become a collective of artists that create immense collaborative events, comics, books, audio rituals and film pieces and we have produced our work in historical buildings such as the Galleries of Justice, Nottingham to prestigious cultural venues such as the Institute of Contemporary Arts, internationally to America and Prague and worked for clients such as the BBC. Our core collective features artists from England, Czech Republic, Sweden, the Netherlands and America, and we continually collaborate with different artists worldwide in selected projects.
