The School of Communication and Culture invites applications for the position of professor of dramaturgy. The position is based at the Department of Dramaturgy and Musicology, which is part of the School of Communication and Culture.
The appointment is tenured and begins on 1 February 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Dramaturgy at Aarhus University has a strong tradition for combining theoretical and practical research paradigms in areas such as theatre production, theatre history, media dramaturgy, applied dramaturgy and cultural politics and organisation, and for collaborating with theatre makers, cultural institutions and other partners outside the university. The successful applicant will be expected to strengthen the research profile of dramaturgy at the department nationally and internationally. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to a collaborative and outward-oriented academic environment by expanding the international network of the department (for example through the recruitment of guest academics).

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to and provide leadership in relation to tasks and responsibilities within Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching and supervision, talent development and knowledge exchange.

We are looking for a candidate with a solid record of accomplishment in research and research leadership in relation to theoretical and thematic developments within dramaturgy, broadly conceived as the study of theatrical and performative communication across media and artistic and cultural practices. The successful applicant will be expected to develop, obtain funding for and communicate the results of collaborative research projects. The successful applicant will furthermore be expected to produce research at the highest international level.

The successful applicant will be expected to have solid experience of teaching at university level, and should be prepared to teach and supervise at all degree programme levels (BA, MA and PhD) in dramaturgy as well as interdisciplinary courses offered by the School of Communication and Culture.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the curriculum development of the dramaturgy programme, and in developing, testing and applying new didactic methods that include student involvement and educational IT. Applicants are invited to describe their areas of teaching expertise and interest, but special attention will be given to applicants who are able to teach courses in theatre production, theatre history and/or media dramaturgy, if possible (but not necessarily) in combination. The successful applicant may be expected to teach courses in English.

The successful applicant will be expected to recruit, support and supervise PhD students and postdocs and to participate in the development and implementation of PhD courses within the field.

The successful applicant is expected to engage in extensive knowledge exchange involving various sectors of society outside the university, for instance via research collaboration with external partners. The professor is also expected to take part in public debates in areas related to the position.

Applicants must provide documentation of a PhD degree in dramaturgy, theatre or performance studies or similar qualifications. In relation to the field of dramaturgy, applicants must be able to document

• a record of original international academic, peer-reviewed research publications at the highest international level;
• a record of accomplishment in research leadership and research management, including attracting and administering external research funding, organising research groups and collaborating internationally;
• active and current participation in international research and academic networks;
• teaching and supervision competences and extensive experience at all levels;
• competences and commitment to engage in the supervision and career development of junior researchers (PhD students, postdoc students and assistant professors), including supervision of research projects and development of research programmes, for instance in the form of PhD courses;
• experience with research communication and knowledge exchange.

The successful applicant must provide a 3-5 year research plan and explain her/his vision for how she/he will contribute to the development of the field. The successful applicant must furthermore explain how she/he will meet the expectations of the professorship to strengthen the international research profile and academic environment of dramaturgy.

If the successful applicant does not speak Danish, she/he will be required to acquire sufficient Danish within two years of commencing the appointment in order to participate fully in the activities of the School of Communication and Culture.

Participation in the daily life of the department is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students. In order to maintain and develop the department’s teaching and research environment, the successful applicant is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis, which will contribute to the School of Communication and Culture’s goal of establishing one of the best research environments in the Nordic countries.

The Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in dramaturgy are organised under the School of Communication and Culture, and currently employ nine full-time academic staff. The staff pursue diverse research interests characterised by research disciplines such as theatre in contemporary and historical perspectives, digital media and aesthetics, interactive dramaturgies, leadership in creative processes and organisations, applied theatre and drama pedagogy, applied dramaturgy, theatre production, theatre and performance analysis, and evaluation of and formative research on cultural institutions, projects, politics and policies. The Bachelor’s degree programme enrolls approximately 35 students per year and the Master’s degree programme approximately 15.
