The Department of Performance Studies offers an M.A. program that provides flexible and interdisciplinary approaches to the study and practice of performance. As such, we welcome interest from students in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. We value performance as research and we encourage but do not require students to mount a performance as part of their degree. Our vibrant, accomplished faculty work internationally in a wide range of cultural contexts, and speak a variety of languages. They are leading scholars in performance, dance, theatre, and sound, with interests in Africana studies, religion, politics, martial arts, technology, theatre history, sound, media, folk/traditional and popular music, cultural studies, critical theory, religion, race, gender, and sexuality.

We prioritize student achievement and professionalization and offer opportunities that many programs reserve for their Ph.D. candidates. Our talented M.A. students conduct historical and ethnographic research on performance. They have delivered papers at national and regional conferences, published book reviews and journal articles, and won university and college-wide fellowships for their research and professional development. We are committed to helping our students to where they want to go next, whether this is further graduate studies, teaching, public or private sector work, arts administration, or other aspirations.
