The Dance Department at Marymount Manhattan College seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Dance to begin Fall 2022 (September 6, 2022). The department seeks a teacher, scholar, and/or practitioner of African/Jazz/Diasporic Dance, who would also serve a wider scope of the department by overseeing the BFA Jazz concentration students. This position is pending final budget approval.
Required: The candidate must hold an MFA/PhD in Dance or have equivalent professional experience based on the College’s degree equivalency option. Copies of the degree equivalency policy will be made available upon request. Candidates should have five or more years of professional performance experience, three-years or more of full-time or part-time teaching experience at the college level or equivalent, a demonstrated history of professional accomplishment including but not limited to published writing, choreography, performance, and/or alternative creative endeavors. The candidate must demonstrate organizational, leadership and collaborative skills, and a commitment to pre- professional dance training within the context of a liberal arts education.
Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities (4/3 load, or 7 courses per academic year) include African Diasporic Dance Technique(s) (including but not limited to African Dance, Afro-Caribbean Dance, African- American Vernacular Dance Forms, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop…), and dance and cultural history courses from a Non-Western and/or anti-colonial perspective, additional expertise in radical dance pedagogies, somatics, and/or ethnography are also welcome. This position would have the potential to teach the Black Dance in America course currently offered in the Gen Ed curriculum as well as to develop cross disciplinary courses with other areas that speak to culture, race and ethnicity. The candidate will also choreograph on BA and BFA students, and advise the Jazz concentration students. The preferred candidate will bring demonstrated leadership and production experience to the department and be prepared to work collaboratively with other members of the Dance faculty to advance the department’s pledge to develop and implement recruitment strategies, curriculums, pedagogies, and dance production practices that are anti-racist, anti-sexist, gender, and LGBTQIA+ inclusive. Other responsibilities include acting as a liaison for all co-teachers and/or adjunct faculty in area(s) of expertise, commitment to regular office hours for ongoing mentoring of students’ creative and professional development, college-wide service, participation in divisional and college meetings, academic advisement, and ongoing creative and/or scholarly accomplishment.
MMC’s Dance program: offers outstanding professional training, a rich liberal arts curriculum, and the opportunity to engage with New York City’s cultural resources. The Dance Department enrolls 200 BFA/BA major combined, making it one of the largest departments in the college. The BFA curriculum includes a broad range of dance styles, preparing graduates to perform and/or choreograph in diverse aesthetics from ballet to musical theatre.
