The School offers a Major and Minor in Theatre and Performance Studies as part of the School’s Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts programs. Many students undertake combined and joint degrees with a large range of UNSW degree offerings. Theatre and Performance Studies staff also run large General Education subjects that attract students from across UNSW, including HUMS1006 Presentation and Communication Skills, ARTS1122 Creativity and HUMS1010 Experiencing the Sydney Opera House.
WHY YOUR ROLE MATTERS:
As a Lecturer in Theatre and Performance Studies, you will contribute to teaching and supervision at undergraduate, Honours, and postgraduate level, and undertake research appropriate to their discipline. You will also carry out professional, industry and community engagement activities. As a Lecturer you will conduct administration, leadership and service activities within the discipline, School, Faculty and University.
The role of Lecturer reports to the Head of School and has no reports.
Our teaching, research and industry engagement is supported by the recently built Esme Timbery Creative Practice Lab. Named for Esme Timbery—a celebrated Bidjigal artist and Elder from the La Perouse Aboriginal community, the Traditional Owners of the land on which the UNSW Kensington campus is built—it consists of two state-of-the-art theatres. It is staffed with a production team and designer to support our practice-based subjects such as ARTS2122 Performance Production, ARTS3123 Solo Performance Making, and ARTS3124 Collaborative Performance Making. It also supports our combined theoretical/practice courses such as ARTS1120.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific accountabilities for this role include (but are not limited to):
* Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning.
* Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses in line with UNSW policy.
* Design and develop learning activities and resources, and assessment and feedback, using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
* Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning with the support of more senior academics.
* Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students.
* Engage in individual and/or collaborative research in a manner consistent with disciplinary practice.
WHO YOU ARE
The skills and experience you will have for the Lecturer (Level B) position include (but are not limited to):
* A completed PhD/DCA in a relevant discipline
* A demonstrated specialisation in devising, directing, making and/or writing for performance. Applicants with research specialisations in areas that complement existing staff expertise through a focus on new media and digital performance, performance and well-being, creative arts industries and policies, and First Nations theatre and performance are particularly encouraged to apply.
* Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate students at a range of levels and in a range of formats, including (a) the ability to use educational technologies and online methods; (b) the ability to support diverse students with a range of learning styles and needs; and (c) the capacity for curriculum design.
* Ability to supervise Honours and postgraduate students
* Strong record in research with a developing profile in traditional and/or Non-Traditional Research Outputs relevant to the discipline
* Potential to attract research grants
