An “arts powerhouse,” the College of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts (PVFA) is a College within the Texas A&M University System and has a dynamic mission with nearly 100 faculty, more than 30 staff members, and a projected exponential growth in the next 5 years. PVFA brings music, theatre, dance, performance studies, painting, graphic design, sculpture, visual computing, and game design faculty together. Aiming at fully capitalizing on this vibrant atmosphere, the mission of PVFA places a heavy emphasis on faculty and student collaboration and interdisciplinary work in both scholarly and creative research. PVFA is also interested in candidates who can contribute to our commitment to creating unexpected connections between the arts and applied science, such as those working at the intersection of theatre and virtual production, health sciences, virtual and mixed reality, AI/generative art, or similar areas. Instructional faculty members will primarily be evaluated on teaching activity, creative work and service activity related to instruction, and program/curricular development.
A unique theatre degree, the Theatre BFA at Texas A&M emphasizes devising and developing new works. The successful candidate will have ample opportunity to contribute at an early stage to the theatre program’s development and evolution. Candidates are expected to teach undergraduate courses in theatre, theatrical design, scenography, and stagecraft, develop and implement new curricula pertaining to the PVFA College programs, particularly in the area of theatre, contribute to up to 4 co-curricular performance offerings per academic year, and contribute to academic service.
Qualifications
For appointments at Instructional Assistant Professor level, applicants must have a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in theatre-related fields, or a combination of a master’s level degree in theatre-related fields and significant teaching experience at the college/school level in the field or in a related field. Preference will be given to individuals with university teaching and student mentorship experience, demonstrated experience in scenic design for theatre and/or other forms of live performance, experience with devised theatre, working knowledge of the materials and methods of scenic construction, properties, and scenic painting, working knowledge of theatrical design software (such as Vectorworks, Isadora, and AutoCAD), full and current knowledge of industry safety and best practices, and participation in multidisciplinary research and/or creative activities.
