It is with great pleasure that I share my new monograph on the dramaturgy, psychology, and performativity of Performance Generating Systems in Dance from Intellect.

Consolidating ten years of research, this book takes a close, yet accessible, look at how systematic, improvised dance creations work: how they self-organize on stage, how they affect dancers’ learning and agency, and how they bring about change, even to change-resistant conditions (trauma). The book delivers analytical frameworks and research results for dance scholars and scientists. However, it is also meant as a go-to for choreographers, dance educators, and community dance workers who seek to further develop their methods, as the central components and training requirements of leading choreographers’ systems are described and explained in ways that inspire practical engagement. The book features works by William Forsythe, Deborah Hay and Christopher House, Ame Henderson, Karen Kaeja, and Lee Su-Feh.
